You Like Me! You Really Like Me!

Thursday, April 3rd, 2003

Since its release, PodWorks has appeared in a variety of places, including the standard iPod sites (iPodLounge, iPoding), Mac magazines (MacAddict, MacUser UK, Brazil’s MacMania), and shareware review sites. All of which is nice, of course, but what been I’ve really been coveting all this time was just to be mentioned on a weblog or two.

The reason for this is only partly commercial—a lot of people do read weblogs, of course, but they still don’t hold a candle to the front page of VersionTracker for publicity. Truth be told (and I’m just going to come right out and say this), the real reason I’ve always yearned to be “blogged” has a lot more to do with pure, unadulterated ego!

You see, I tend to think of the kind of people who have weblogs, more than anyone else, as my peers—both socially and professionally. More importantly, a great many webloggers seem to be what Tim O’Reilly has called “Alpha Geeks“—the vanguards of cutting-edge technology and high priests (if you will) of the web. So, while I may make more money from a single day of exposure on VersionTracker, a mention on an “A-list” weblog would be infinitely more satisfying from a “prestige” standpoint. It’s like the difference between breaking a box-office record and winning an Academy Award—both are cool, but the latter is way cooler.

With this in mind, you can imagine my elation today when I finally got my wish, in the form of a mention in Jason Kottke’s “Remaindered Links” (and right above a Dave Eggers reference—talk about cultural elite heaven!).

The irony of it all, of course, is that today has probably been my slowest order day in over a month. I guess it’s true that you can’t have both commercial success and critical recognition!

As a side note to anyone who might see Mr. Kottke’s description of the software: it does indeed allow you to copy songs off the iPod, but you do still need iTunes to put them on the iPod. I may implement this feature at some point, but currently I have a very long “To Do” list and I haven’t designated that as a “high-value target” (to use the parlance of the time).

At any rate, many thanks to Mr. Kottke!
